I understand that Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball (MBYB) is a recreational basketball program for boys and girls from kindergarten through 12th grade. I also understand that my responsibilities as a youth coach are of great importance and that my actions may significantly influence the players who I coach.

I understand that MBYB’s mission is to provide an opportunity for MBYB players to have a positive experience in basketball by emphasizing development, teamwork, participation, sportsmanship, and the enjoyment of the game.

I understand that as a youth coach I am obligated to honor the rules of the game, opponents, officials, players, parents, and spectators and to teach players to do the same.

Therefore, by participating as a MBYB volunteer coach, I will adhere to the following Code of Ethics.
  1. I will create an appropriate environment for children that:
  • Focuses on safety, fun, development, and teamwork;
  • Has a positive lasting impact on the children of our community;
  • Promotes building character and learning life skills; and
  • Builds a culture where winning is not defined by outcome of competition, but by the individual needs of all the children.
  1. I will act responsibly and do my best to assure that:
  • I will provide playing time for every child and abide by MBYB's rules in respect to playing time;
  • I will properly educate players on the importance of teamwork, effort, having fun, and sportsmanship while properly instructing age appropriate fundamentals and skills;
  • I will cooperate with MBYB in the enforcement of rules and regulations, and will report irregularities that violate sound recreational practices;
  • I will not tolerate any form of child abuse whether it be physical, verbal, emotional, or sexual and will immediately report any such abuse to the proper authorities;
  • I will uphold the authority of the officials who are assigned to the games in which I coach and will assist them in every way to conduct fair and impartial games;
  • I agree to never openly dispute or argue an official’s decision during a game; and
  • I will remember that I am a youth basketball coach and that the game is for youth and not for adults.
  1. During all MBYB events, including but not limited to practices and games, I will
  •  treat each player, opposing coach, official, parent, or spectator with respect and dignity, and refrain from using profanity, intimidation tactics, and inappropriate language;
  • display appropriate behavior towards, and in the presence of, children;
  • never coach under the influence of drugs or alcohol; and
  • never initiate or participate in any form of verbal or physical assault on any player, official, parent, or spectator.
  1. I understand that a violation of the Code of Ethics listed above may result in immediate termination of my privilege to coach in MBYB.

MBYB reserves the right to take appropriate disciplinary action against, including dismissal of any coach who fails to comply with any and all provisions of this Code of Ethics.
